The city kept an agricultural character in the 19th and 20th centuries. Economic development has influenced the architecture of the city. After break-up of Austria-Hungary in 1918, the town became part of Czechoslovakia and received status of the district capital.
Event and Location information
Nitra is situated on seven hills on both sides of the river Nitra, a strategic geographic location. The city has a wealth of historic structures and natural beauty in its surroundings. Various institutions, universities, theatres and museums and a well-known location of fairs as well as a modern centre of industries are based in Nitra. Every year, thanks its dynamic cultural life, various events attract a multitude of visitors: artists from the field of theatre, creative arts, modern or classical music, tourists and culture lovers.
By car, Nitra is reachable from Bratislava in about an hour using the E75 and E571 highways.
